EAA Airventure Oshkosh Leg 2

VFR Leg to Catch some Z's

Original I picked an airport to overnight at that was only 1 hour leg to land at and catch some sleep.  After looking at the storms on the scope, I determined that if I continued with that plan, we might be trapped in the morning by the storms.  So I extended the next leg of the trip to Downtown Wheeler airport in Kansas City.  It was about a two hour leg that we took on VFR.  We landed exactly at Midnight.

Approach into KMKC

It was a quiet night on the radio as we approached Kansas City Class Bravo Airspace.  When we were about 15 minutes out (and only a few minutes from entering Class Bravo at our 4,500 altitude) the controller asked us if we could help him out.  They were testing a different frequency and he asked us to switch over and see if we could contact them on that frequency.  We couldn't.  So we switched back.  He asked us to switch over and listen for a couple of minutes and then return to him.  My audio panel wasn't working well, so I couldn't listen to both at the same time, and I advised him on that.   I was happy to help, but I was worried that I was quickly approaching Class Bravo Airspace and I hadn't heard those magic words "Cleared into Class Bravo."  I listened for as much of the two minutes that I could stand before switching back to report, "I'm approaching class bravo airspace!"   To which I heard the magic words, "Thanks for your help, cleared into Class Bravo Airspace and make straight in for the runway."

Jacob's Second landing of the night

We got the plane all buttoned down and ready for the night and used the Pilot's lounge as our overnight spot.  They had these great recliner chairs that would lay flat.  So Jacob and I got our sleeping bags and pillows out and camped out for the night.  Jacob got into position first and promptly flipped the chair over backwards and landed between the chair and the wall.  He was stuck.  I thought about just going to sleep, but decided to help pull him up instead.

We ended up getting a decent nights sleep from about 1am to 6am.  When we woke up to our plane being ready, IFR flight plan filed and a quick breakfast from the vending machine.  Away we went.  The folks at Signature Flight Support in KMKC were great people and took good care of us during our short stay.
