Smithville Flyin - Flying back in the weather

We flew the Bonanza out to Smithville today to enjoy the annual Smithville Flyin (84R).  Watching the weather, it was not looking good for the day.   We took off from Smithville not even thinking of heading back to Austin, but moving further East to wait for the storm to blow over.   In retrospect, I am glad we didn't wait for it to blow over, because I would still be waiting right now.  Once airborne I looked at the available weather on board (ADS-B Next Rad) and ATIS reports nearby.  It looked pretty smooth and clear under the cloud base, so we gave it a shot.

I had my exit planned to the south east.  I was flying VFR, but had Flight Following with Austin ATC.  If needed, I could get a Popup IFR Clearance.  But my rule is to not fly IFR on days like this.  I might rather be out of the clouds looking for trouble.  Once you are IMC, you have no clue if you are about to come up on something scary.

As it turned out, we made it straight to Austin with no rain, no VFR clearance issues, and smooth air the whole way.   As soon as I landed, it started raining on us as I was unloading the airplane.

Moral of the story... ADS-B Next Rad is an important tool, but it doesn't always paint the full picture.  Not only is it delayed, but it often shows things that are not really there.   Also important... If you are going to try and push forward; know you backup plan before you do.  When it is time to use it, don't think, just do it!   In this case, we didn't need it.  Next time I might.
