EAA Oshkosh 2015 and the Fisk Arrival

Heading to Oshkosh

This was a VFR Leg for us because arriving to Oshkosh IFR isn't recommended unless you need it.   We flew west of Madison and picked up flight following.  ADS-B Traffic let us know that we were not alone.    The Madison controller was a busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest.   Once we heard the following exchange:

"N123ABC Where are you going?"

"Going to Oshkosh"

"So is everyone else and you are going a different direction!"

The Fisk Arrival to 36L

Once we were clear of Madison we were told to squawk VFR and we did... then turned off the transponder per the Oshkosh NOTAM.   We flew direct to Rippon and kept an eye on every airplane that we could see.  We passed a few and were passed by many.  Airplanes everywhere!  We followed the route, kept our airspeed right at 90kts, picked out spot out in line.  Once we had to fend off a guy who tried to cut us off, but all the years of driving in traffic on Austin, TX highways, I was able to hold my spot and not let him in.   We approached Rippen, flew over the railroad tracks.   I was a little sad when I heard the call, "Cherokee, turn right 090 for 36L" and never got the chance to do a wing rock.  Oh well, away we went.  Jacob didn't hear the call, and asked me, "Where are you going?"  I replied, "To the runway, we got our clearance, didn't you hear it?"  It happened so fast that he didn't even notice.

We lined up on 36L and was assigned the yellow dot.   I knew we had a problem when the plane in front of me also touched down on the yellow dot and I heard the call to go around.   So we did and flew right closed traffic for 36R.  The controllers even gave us a call out, "Good Job Cherokee, cleared to land 36R mid field"   We flew around and put her down right where we needed watching the plane in front of us.  You don't get much clear runway when landing at Oshkosh!

Only After landing did we notice that the USAF F-36 Lightning had landed just before us.  It was an honor sharing the same runways as that nice bird!

After landed, it took a solid 20 minutes to taxi to parking.  But we had made it.

Welcome to Oshkosh!
