Leaving Austin for EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2015

Departing Austin

Before Leaving for Oshkosh, I visited the airport the night before to do a detailed preflight inspection incase I needed the MX shop to do some work before we left.  Thankfully, everything checked out.  I had the FBO fill the tanks, loaded up enough oil for the trip so we would be ready.  Afterwork, Jacob and I met for a quick dinner at Arby's and then we headed to the airport.  We loaded our gear and did a preflight inspection.  Loaded the flight plan into the GPS and then started the engine.

The Flight Plan

The Flight plan was: KAUS CWK4 ACT V15 CQY H34.   Why Huntsville Mini (H34)?  Well, it had cheap AvGas.  $3.95 a gallon.  The flight plan was for about 3:50 minutes.   We picked up between a 5 and 10kts tail wind the whole way at 5,000 feet.

In Route Weather

We watched some storms on ADS-B while we were a 100nm out and kept an eye on them.  as we got closer, we worked with ATC to deviate to the east to avoid them.  We were treated to a very nice light show as we flew by.  The storms were not very large and we felt we had a wide margin of safety to get around them.

Approach to Landing

All of the weather reporting around the airport reported greater than 10sm visibility and clear skies.  What they didn't report were the small patchy low level clouds that were around.  On the approach to the runway the runway disappeared from view.  At night these clouds are impossible to see until late.  (VFR pilots, be aware of this, it can sneak up and get you real quick)   I was able to widen out my base and stay clear and regain visual of the runway.   The only catch was I setup very high for a final approach.  I slipped the airplane down and set her down on the ground a little further down the runway than I wanted, but with more than enough room.

Quick Fueling and then Back in the air

The storms were on the horizon.  They were not very close and I knew we had hours before they made it to H34, but still, I wanted to get out of there and into clear air as quick as possible.  We added 34.3 gallons to the warrior and we were off.
