One of the greatest things in aviation is getting to introduce new people to flying for the first time. The mission this night was to extend my night currency so I would be ready for my trip to Oshkosh later this year. We have a team member at my new job who has a big interest in learning aviation, but had never flown in a small plane before. So I was able to invite him and another friend who never had flown before. We all met at the airport and spent some time talking with our A&P about some work being performed on one of our other airplanes. This was a great introduction into the real world of aviation.
An hour after the sun set and with Preflight complete we hoped into the Warrior and departed Austin (KAUS). We flew the short distance to Lake Travis where we requested to maneuver for a bit. I this gave the new pilots a chance to feel the controls and see what an airplane can really do. Then we headed for Lago Vista Rusty Allen Airport (KRYW). I performed a full stop with a taxi back, one more trip around the pattern for a second full stop. We taxied over to get some fuel and allow my passengers to switch seats.
We departed Lago Vista where we maneuvered over the lake again allowing Miles a chance to feel the controls of the airplane before heading back to Austin for our final full stop night landing.
These are some of my favorite flights. I really enjoy the first time someone gets to fly in a small plane and they actually get to put their hands on the controls for the first time. So many people do not realize how obtainable a Pilots License really is.
